Day trips and visitors
We enrich our curriculum through regular day trips, workshops and by inviting visitors into our school. These often link in with our Immersive Learning topics in years 1—6. As our school is situated quite centrally in the city, we are able to walk to the museums, galleries and attractions in central Bristol, which we do as much as possible. We also take coach trips to places like Bath, Caerleon and a farm in North Somerset.
For example, in year 3, we invite an Arctic scientist into school to talk about her experiences and what it’s like to live and work in that environment. In year 1, for example, the children go on The Matthew ship dressed as pirates and sail up the river to see what life on board is like. In year 5, we get the Explorer Dome to come into school to show their Space Show, an inspiring tour of Earth, our moon, the sun and the solar system.
We also invite in our parents, carers and grandparents to come into school and share their experiences with the children, linking in with the curriculum wherever possible. For example, we’ve had a street artist work with year 6 and an architect come in to see year 5’s designs. These visits show the children that their learning relates to real life and that there are varied careers available to them in the future using the knowledge and skills they build in school.
These experiences add to and enrich our children’s learning within school, providing them with
memories that will last far into the future.
Theatre trips
Every year, all of our children are given the opportunity to go to the theatre in December. These trips are subsidised by our amazing PTA and make it possible for everyone to attend. We look at what’s on at the local theatres in Bristol and then book tickets for all children from Preschool up to year 6. In previous years, our children have gone to the Tobacco Factory, Bristol Old Vic and the Hippodrome. This is one of the highlights of our calendar and really adds to the cultural experiences that our children have.
